Ideally we'd like the Bindings interface of JSR-223 extended so it supports 'outer' scopes.

Nashorn on the other hand has very fast removal of variables. It has an exponential slowness as more and more variables are handled. Now, it turns out that REMOVING variables from the Bindings object ('GraalJSBindings') takes a considerable amount of time. We DO have a tree-like data structure of all variables (implementing the Bindings interface too), but this tree structure isn't understood by JSR-223 so we manually need to add and remove variables from the script engine's Bindings object as we move from one image to another, or between folders. An 'image' scope carries many variables representing image metadata (captions, titles, camera related data etc).Īs we iterate through images, we need to 'clear' the variables bound to the previous image from the current scope. A 'folder' scope for instance, carries information on folder title and number of images in that folder. Each scope carries with it relevant variables. Each image is an isolated 'scope', their parent folder is one 'scope' and then there is a global scope. Scripts are processed in various 'scopes'. Here's for instance a scriptlet to provide the number of pixels per image: Many times, small JSP-like scriptlets are executed as part of html template files. JAlbum's 3:rd party gallery plugins ('skins') use scripting to provide custom logic and behavior for gallery themes. Just take support for Apple's M1 processor for instance. This is becoming more and more of a pain as we miss out on recent Java development. Due to performance issues with GraalJS, we've been held back from moving beyond Java 14 for years.

In our Java desktop based web gallery software 'jAlbum', we use Nashorn Javascript along with other JSR-223 compatible scripting languages, specifically BeanShell and Groovy. Search results, limited to the settings window, are shown as you type, if your target is visible then click on it or use the down/up arrow keys to move through the list and then click on it or hit 'Enter' to select it.#561 (' #561') but we think it's better to open a new case than hijacking that one as our suggested solution may be different.
